Sigh To understand the following dialogue, you must first read this tidbit on Teleologic Sorcery:
( Read more... )[02:51:21] Diarik: Okay, now I sleep, and hopefully a miracle will happen tomorrow.
[02:51:50] Friend: good luck?
[02:51:50] *** Auto-response sent to Friend: Do you remember your dreams? I've forgotten mine. I suppose that's what sleep is for, so I'll get back to you after I've had some.
[02:52:34] Diarik: Nah. I'm pretty sure someone cast Sever Thread (a teleologic spell) on me.
[02:53:03] Friend: ...who?
[02:53:52] Diarik: Probably God.
[02:54:00] Friend: Haha.
[02:54:03] Friend: Sorry man.
[02:54:59] Diarik: Meh. My life sucks. I get to fix it. Or die trying. *whistles*
[02:55:32] Friend: I wish you luck then.
In other words, let's imagine for a moment that I have a destiny. What Sever Thread does is warp fate in such a way that reality snaps back and attempts to incapacitate me. Over. And over. And over.
And this is a thesis on self: "Meh. My life sucks. I get to fix it. Or die trying."
"Meh.": Apathy.
"My life sucks.": Self-pity.
"I get to fix it.": Dubious privileges.
"Or die trying.": Pareto optimal solution. There is no opportunity cost.*
* For most people, death is at least an alternative, even if it's not the opportunity cost. For me, it's just a matter of sequence. Whether I succeed first or die first.
P.S. It feels odd to call her a friend. I know she respected one of the designs I made with much public gushing, but we generally don't speak except as minimal back-and-forths and sometimes when trader-poaching.
