    Family?
Wow. It's amazing how fast the meaning of a word can change.

c.1400, "servants of a household," from L. familia "household," including relatives and servants, from famulus "servant," of unknown origin. The classical L. sense recorded in Eng. from 1545; the main modern sense of "those connected by blood" (whether living together or not) is first attested 1667. Replaced O.E. hiwscipe. Buzzword family values first recorded 1966. Phrase in a family way "pregnant" is from 1796. Family circle is 1809; family man, one devoted to wife and children, is 1856 (earlier it meant "thief," 1788, from family in slang sense of "the fraternity of thieves").

In other news, I'm never going to expect John to come back "soon". It's like Simu-soon, I swear. I'm sure he'll have a reason/excuse if he realizes this.

    Sigh
To understand the following dialogue, you must first read this tidbit on Teleologic Sorcery: Read more... )
[02:51:21] Diarik: Okay, now I sleep, and hopefully a miracle will happen tomorrow.
    [02:51:50] Friend: good luck?
[02:51:50] *** Auto-response sent to Friend: Do you remember your dreams? I've forgotten mine. I suppose that's what sleep is for, so I'll get back to you after I've had some.
[02:52:34] Diarik: Nah. I'm pretty sure someone cast Sever Thread (a teleologic spell) on me.
    [02:53:03] Friend: ...who?
    [02:53:52] Diarik: Probably God.
    [02:54:00] Friend: Haha.
    [02:54:03] Friend: Sorry man.
[02:54:59] Diarik: Meh. My life sucks. I get to fix it. Or die trying. *whistles*
[02:55:32] Friend: I wish you luck then.

In other words, let's imagine for a moment that I have a destiny. What Sever Thread does is warp fate in such a way that reality snaps back and attempts to incapacitate me. Over. And over. And over.

And this is a thesis on self: "Meh. My life sucks. I get to fix it. Or die trying."

    "Meh.": Apathy.
    "My life sucks.": Self-pity.
"I get to fix it.": Dubious privileges.
"Or die trying.": Pareto optimal solution. There is no opportunity cost.*

    * For most people, death is at least an alternative, even if it's not the opportunity cost. For me, it's just a matter of sequence. Whether I succeed first or die first.

P.S. It feels odd to call her a friend. I know she respected one of the designs I made with much public gushing, but we generally don't speak except as minimal back-and-forths and sometimes when trader-poaching.

    Erin McKean - Verbatim - Apr 26, 2006
    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1588634025806636713

There are a couple reasons I want people to watch this.

Reason 1: Erin is a lexicographer. She's also a "normal" person, as normal as any geekish person can get, anyways.
Reason 2: She explains dictionaries. She explains it a relevant and interesting way. Just about everything I have tried to explain and express and more.
Reason 3: Not actually relevant )

Anyways, go watch it. It's 54 minutes long, but it's worth it all. It's an awesome ending.

Now try to imagine what would happen if academic departments operated more like YouTube or Wikipedia, allowing for the rapid deployment of scattered expertise and the dynamic reconfiguration of fields. Let's call this new form of academic unit a "YouNiversity."
    --Jenkins

    *shakes fist* My idea!

He's even fleshed it out way beyond anything I'm capable of imagining:

    http://www.henryjenkins.org/2007/02/from_youtube_to_youniversity.html

Continued: "To educate such students, we don't so much need a faculty as we need an intellectual network."

*sighs* Why do I suck so much? Come on. Hit me again.

Finally: "The modern university should work not by defining fields of study but by removing obstacles so that knowledge can circulate and be reconfigured in new ways."

Okay, so he doesn't have my idea completely. I still have a place in this world! Yay.
